Wara’et Lahmah

I used to be a vegetarian 6 years ago, and during this time that I actually enjoyed and that has transformed my lifestyle on so many levels my mom had always told me that Egyptian food is actually originally really healthy. Believe it or not, this is technically true! We also tend to have numerous vegetarian options in our cuisine, additionally our food is very healthy but we tend to add oils and A LOT of butter to make it taste richer while basically it can taste equally delicious when it’s done in a healthier way.

Therefore, I decided to share with you every now and then healthier versions of Egyptian household recipes that are easier to make and absolutely lighter.

REMINDER:

You shouldn’t just eat healthier to lose or maintain weight, there are hundreds of foods that have a higher caloric amount yet are healthier than others. For instance, some gluten free flours have higher caloric amount that the normal wheat flour however they’re healthier. Therefore, you shall always bare in mind that eating healthier is for your heart, mind, digestion, bones, eyesight, teeth and finally your weight. You can eat food full of oils and carbs in low quantity and never gain weight, yet you’re damaging your heart and risking your gut’s process.

So, for today I’d like to share with you our traditional Wara’et lahma, but definitely in a healthier version cause this time we won’t be frying our potatoes they’ll be roasted in the oven instead.

Perfectionnn

All you need is:

  • 4 medium sized potatoes
  • 1 large onion
  • 4 diced garlic cloves
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp zaatar
  • 2 diced hot peppers *optional*
  • 1 shredded carrot
  • 1 kg boiled meat *I used meat chunks like ones used for kebab halla*
  • 1 tsp oil

Instructions:

  • Preheat your oven to 200 C
  • Cut your potatoes into cubes, your onion into rings, dice your garlic, shred your carrot and cut your pepper
  • In a bowl add in the potatoes, garlic, onion, pepper and carrot and then add all your spices.
  • In a baking tray place some aluminum foil long enough to cover the potatoes amount you’ll place.
  • Grease your pan and add your potatoes.
  • Add your meat cubes on top and cover your tray with the foil.
  • Place it in your oven for about 45 mins.
